QUERIES

Okanagan ArtsFreelancers interested in contributing to Okanagan Arts should submit a clear, specific, concise outline of the topic they wish to write about. They should explain why they think it would be of interest to Okanagan Arts readers and also provide reasons why they have the background or experience to successfully carry out the assignment. Subject, sources, projected length of the article, types of interviews and angle should all be clearly explained in written form.

Articles submitted by first-time writers are treated completely on speculation; after an article has been reviewed and accepted, the editor will negotiate a fee with the writer for the material to be used. Payment is made for published articles at the time of publication.

When an article is assigned to a writer, article length is set by the editor at the time the assignment is made. The average length of feature articles in Okanagan Arts is 1000-1200 words; lengths of secondary features, columns and departments at the front and back of the magazine range from 300 to 500 words.

Okanagan Arts buys First North American serial rights and non-exclusive WWW rights to all its articles. Contributors are free to resell their articles after publication, but not before.

Okanagan Arts' lead time is 2 months. Publication dates are the first day of March, June, September and December.

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION AND ACCEPTANCE PROCEDURE

Okanagan Arts accepts both solicited and unsolicited texts for review. Prior to developing a complete manuscript, authors are encouraged to submit an outline to the editor, who will make a preliminary decision regarding the topic's relevance to the journal's aims and scope and will provide suggestions for developing the manuscript.

Manuscripts should be emailed directly to the editor at info@okanaganarts.com. Manuscripts for initial review may be submitted with embedded low-resolution images, which facilitates the review process. When submitting a manuscript, authors should include a statement indicating that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not being submitted for publication elsewhere.

Generally each manuscript is reviewed by one member of the Okanagan Arts editorial advisory board and the editor. A request by the editor for a manuscript is not a guarantee that it will be published.

Authors are notified of acceptance, rejection or the need for revision within 2 weeks. Texts are judged on the basis of relevance to the aims and scope of the magazine, originality, rigor of thought and the use of straightforward and precise prose. Texts should be condensed as much as possible and written to be accessible to the interested lay reader.

Manuscripts accepted for publication must be submitted as unformatted word-processed text without embedded illustrations or auto-formatted references. Each illustration should be submitted as a separate high-resolution file (see the following section on Illustrations). After a manuscript is accepted, it is edited and returned to the author for approval prior to publication.

Authors should avoid esoteric words, non-English words, slang, idioms and colloquialisms unless they are important to the substance and style of the piece. Abbreviations and special terms, especially highly technical terms, should be defined in the text or in a glossary at the end of the text. Acronyms should be spelled out on the first appearance.

Ten copies of the issue in which their work appears are provided free of charge to authors, and can be picked up by local authors at the Arts Council office. Authors in other locations will have their copies mailed to them.

COPYRIGHT

Copyrights to articles and illustrations remain with their current copyright holders. Signed permissions to publish both text and images must be received at the Okanagan Arts editorial office before any manuscript will be edited in preparation for publication. In cases where an image is copyrighted by a third party, authors are responsible for obtaining copyright permissions, including online reproduction rights. Any fees required to obtain illustrations or to secure copyright permissions are the responsibility of authors.

Permission to re-use material copyrighted by Okanagan Arts is routinely given to the authors of articles for use in their own publications. Use by third parties is not provided without concurrence of the author.
