Okanagan Arts: Open Studios

AN EXCITING ARTS EVENT Open Studios provides a unique opportunity to experience the diverse talent thriving in our community.

Open Studios promotes recognition that the arts are a significant component of our region and contribute to the public awareness about the quality and diversity of art created in our community. It also provides an educational experience for all ages, which will help foster an interest in and a greater understanding of the artistic process. This program provides a rare opportunity of seeing artists in their own environment and to experience artists discussing and demonstrating their materials and art process.

Artists and arts organizations invite you to witness art in the making, and to explore the workings of their studios. Step inside a potters wet room, discuss carving with a stonemason. Go behind the scenes of a play in progress, a film in the making, a story being told. Learn where artists find inspiration and why they do what they do. What makes them so passionate about their craft and process. For visitors, we open our doors to you.

Liability: The Arts Council and the participating artists cannot accept liability for any loss, damage, or injury sustained by a member of the public visiting any site, or event. They do so at their own risk.

With my canvas ready to go, I work very quickly at first on a rotating round table. At the beginning I use my acrylic paints and inks in many washes. As I visualize the colours and images in my head, I apply more layers of colour, most of which I mix myself.
I work with a great deal of freedom and as the painting develops the images take form and are further defined.

Abstract painter. My paintings allude to the surface of the earth. They are not site-specific but their organic marks do resemble earth's topography, acting more as metaphors for earth's surface. They are also about the ephemeral. My subconscious absorbs daily small things, say, a gestural mark of a branch or a fissure in the earth. This just has to be transferred to my canvas: a recorded process of time. Alongside, the work comprises an eclectic mix of random adding and subtracting: controlling the medium yet allowing the accidental. Through building, deconstructing and then partially rebuilding, painting surfaces are constantly multi-layered, constantly renewed. This compromise between deliberate design and happenstance lets me research my interest between balance, tension and harmony:

Kenna Graff

Paintings in Acrylic. Currently my work travels between an abstract landscape route and an earthy impressionism path. Very elemental. Layered landscapes, vanishing points and atmospheric gestures suggest where the land and sky meet. A slim horizon delineates the desert's deep haze of lush hues from the sky's inter-fusion of supernatural wonders; stars, comets, lightning, thunder and rain in luxurious colour imbue the images with a greater essence to come to life. Earlier work on my website www.kennagraff.com reflects vividly my passion for nature and spirit. Art can also be seen at www.HambletonGalleries.com, contact either for viewing, commissions or information.

Linda Lovisa

Water Colors and Oils. When Linda Lovisa moved to Kelowna, BC in 2006, she was impressed by the beauty of the Okanagan Valley landscape, but felt the loneliness and isolation of the desert climate. As an outdoors person who has lived in North Western Ontario for the last twenty years, she found the wildlife and terrain daunting to a newcomer. However, her adventurous spirit soon had Linda hiking the Monashees for inspiration in her art work, and her determination and preparedness allowed her to overcome the challenges starting over presents. The Canadian landscape has inspired Linda since she was ten years old, and this self-taught artist has dedicated her life to intensifying a fragile moment in nature or everyday vignette so that the busy people may pause for a moment to reflect. Her passion for life and creativity meld together in her artwork with her use of colour and motion, and breathe life into landscapes to provoke our inner souls for appreciation of our natural surroundings. Linda's artwork allows oneself to reconnect with the land and spirituality, and in doing so, offers us a great gift. For private or group lessons, give Linda a call.

Cherlynne Jeanne Sweet

"Everything is Black and White"
Born in Squamish, raised in Vancouver and now settled in the Penticton area; A slower pace stimulates my creative flow. Ms. Sweet has two favorite artists, Emily Carr and Pablo Picasso. She believes that since the invention of the camera, and especially the digital era, realism has lost its unique appeal. Anyone can produce a picture perfect scene or portrait. But, abstract is quite another story. All the great artists have come full circle, by first learning to paint what is seen, and finally to paint what is felt. This is what Sherry has done with her own work in 'Everything is Black and White'. The tongue-in-cheek title mimics the idealism of our society.
