Hot Summer Series Turns Cultural Heads

This summer Kelowna has culture on the brain with the launch of a torrid series of presentations, workshops and seminars at Mosaic Books, produced by the Okanagan Institute.

"Imagine Summer is for people who are looking for the wild blue yonder," said Robert MacDonald, who is coordinating the free series in association with the magazines of Wheat King Publishing - Okanagan Arts, Okanagan Home, and Okanagan Q.

"What we want to do is stimulate discussion and remind people that culture doesn't have to be scary. Hey, it can even be fun."

The series has already attracted attention from the cultural community. A stellar group of organizations and businesses have come on board as co-sponsors including the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan, Project Literacy, UBCO's Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, Wood Lake Publishing and CKOV-Radio.

"There's obviously an interest here in getting the word out about all things cultural. These partnerships and collaborations bring together organizations with a common cause, and bring life to these events," MacDonald said.

The Imagine Summer series gets underway Thursday, July 5 at 4:30 p.m. with Reminders and Rumours - Readings for Literacy features readings by Dona Sturmanis, Sterling Haynes, Karin Wilson, Jarrod Thalheimer, Stan Sauerwein, and the photographs of Gary Nylander.

Coming up July 12 is Everyday Spirituality, followed by events exploring such themes as The Heart at Home, Nothing Like Naramata, Decorating is Delightful and Okanagan Vernacular. Some events take place after work on Tuesday or Thursday, and others late Saturday morning.

"Culture doesn't take place inside buildings, it takes place inside people's heads," MacDonald said. "It's what we're thinking about, what we care about, what we're talking about - whether that means talking about writing, or interior decorating, or fine wine. It's what we're creating, and what we're enjoying when we step outside our workday world. Summer is the perfect time to stop and think creatively, and to explore what culture means to ourselves and our community."

For more information about the series, pick up a flyer at Mosaic Books, or visit the Okanagan Institute website at www.okanaganinstitute.com.

Agustin Diaz was born in Matanzas, Cuba, into a family of "rumberos" that helped shape the history of Afro Cuban music. His father, Gregorio Diaz Alfonso, was a founding member of Los MuÒequitos de Matanzas and was one of Cuba's most revered folkloric percussionists. Agustin absorbed traditional Afro Cuban music and watched his father and the other founders make musical history as they developed the distinct Cuban Rumba. His talent, skill and knowledge make Agustin one of the rare keepers of an enormous body of knowledge; a living historian and innovator. In his travels with Los MuÒequitos, he has lovingly taught percussion workshops in England, the U.S., Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland and Germany. He has performed with outstanding musicians such as Chucho ValdÈs and Irakere, Juan Formell y Los Van Van, JosÈ Luis CortÈs and NG La Banda, Herbie Hancock, " Maraca ", Stephan Kurmann, Andy MontaÒez, Gilberto Santarosa, Isaac Delgado, Gilberto Gil, Ismael Miranda, Paulito FG, Haila MompiÈ, the Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba, Cutumba, Yoruba AndabÛ, Los Papines, Clave y GuaguancÚ and Mayito Rivera.

This workshop is a rare opportunity  to learn and experience the rich rhythms of Afro-Cuban folkloric music from a master drummer. Los MuÒequitos de Matanzas are renowned the world over for their pioneering and original expression of the Cuban Rumba. The three distinct rhythms of the Rumba family, Yamb˙, GuaguancÛ and Columbia are played on conga drums and/or cajones (wooden boxes) with accompanying bell and block parts. In the workshop, these three rhythms of Rumba will be explored.  All levels  of experience are welcome.
