Maximum of 12 participants CONGA DRUMS & PERCUSSION EQUIPMENT: Provided ISRAEL ìTotoî BERRIEL is a percussionist & singer in the AfroCuban tradition Toto, a native of the city of Matanzas, Cuba , began his professional music career as a member of ìGrupo AfroCuba de Matanzasî in 1988. After two years with AfroCuba, Toto was invited to join the ranks of world famous ìLOS MU—EQUITOS DE MATANZASî, unexpectedly following in his fatherís footsteps.As a youngster, Toto dreamed of becoming a percussionist and pursued his studies with drums in mind. A naturally gifted vocalist with a distinctivesound, the singer in Toto was rapidly discovered and put to use in the worldís best-known Rumba group. In over a decade with LOS MUNEQUITOS, Toto has toured worldwide, singing, playing and teaching classes. His easy charm, curious mind and characteristic Cuban warmth place Toto affectionately in the minds and hearts of his students, creating a comfortable and productive working environment. In the past decade, Toto has shared the stage with many greats including Herbie Hancock, Los Van Van and Irakere. Although Toto is deeply steeped in the AfroCuban traditions, he also plays joyfully with the influences of Cuban popular music, American jazz, soul and funk. This workshop is an opportunity to learn and experience some of the rich rhythms of Afro-Cuban folkloric music. MIDDLE EASTERN DRUM COURSEDOUMBEK/RIQ WORKSHOP
Saturday October 20, 10:30am-3:00pm with lunch break Workshops are for drummers/dancers of all level who would like to gain some experience and knowledge of the Doumbek and Riq. This course will focus on the rhythms and techniques used in creating the beautiful sounds on these unique instruments. Learn to unlock the mystery of these ancient rhythmic patterns that have intrigued generations since antiquity. In addition, the healing potential of this music is not to be underestimated as research has only begun to tap into the great potential of drumming to enhance our immune and neurologic systems. Topics include Nomenclature, Finger Exercises, Combinations, Improvisations, Fills, Positioning, Basic Notation and Dance accompaniment. Cost: Pre-registration $50 ($65 after October 15, 2007) All classes are held at Kelowna Drum Studio. Bring your own instruments. Hand held tape recorders are okay, but no video cameras. His studies have taken him to Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. Salloum has been principal accompanist to numerous instructors of Rak Sharki (belly dancing) throughout Canada. He has taught percussion for over 20 years in Canada and the United States. Most recently he has been conducting percussion clinics and performing in British Columbia where he resides. Whether that means crafting a custom home from scratch, or putting the final touches into the interior, there is no doubt home is where a large part of our attention is focussed these days. Building Dreams takes place October 11 at 4:30 pm at Mosaic Books as part of the Re:Imagine series presented by the Okanagan Institute. The afternoon hour brings together experts from three local companies who have devoted their lives to making our dream homes come true. Jim Meiklejohn is a renowed Okanagan architect who played an integral role in designing one of Kelowna's first urban homescapes - The Cannery Lofts. He's also put his own particular stamp on numerous public buildings around this region - from the new Kelowna Secondary School to faculty offices at UBCO and the spectacular Holiday Inn at Apex Mountain. Local builder Miles Krahn of Meadow Ridge Homes is the man behind such premier developments as Wilden and The Quarry. Krahn says the key to crafting a beautiful home lies in the communication between client and builder. He'll walk you through exactly what to expect. Paulette & Andrea Harte of Habitat Interiors are designers extraordinaire. With backgrounds in both fine arts and design, this mother and daughter team offers a rich understanding of the world palette as a result of their own travels though India, South Africa, Asia and Europe. PROCLAMATION OF POETRY Wednesday 3 October 7-9pm Downtown Public Library, 1380 Ellis Street, Kelowna On October 3, the City of Kelowna will be proclaiming the day "Poet Laureate Day." The Poet's role is to encourage and promote the importance of literature, culture and language in Canadian society. Federal legislators created the position in 2001 to draw Canadians' attention to poetry, both spoken and written, and its role in our lives. John Steffler is the current Parliamentary Poet Laureate. Steffler will be reading from his work. Refreshments will be provided. A limited edition print of a special poem will be available. The event is open to the public and free of charge. John Steffler is the author of five books of poetry, including The Grey Islands, That Night We Were Ravenous, and Helix: New and Selected Poems. Originally from Ontario, he lived for many years in Corner Brook, Newfoundland where he taught at Memorial University's Grenfell College. He now teaches creative writing at Concordia University in Montreal.
