Call to Artists - Artists Anonymous

ARTISTS ANONYMOUS
Fundraiser to benefit the Arts Council of the North Okanagan - Programming.
November 28th - December 12th, 2008

The Arts Council of the North Okanagan (ACNO) will hold its first annual Artists Anonymous show and sale.  This fundraiser will benefit programming at the Vernon Community Arts Centre.
The concepts that will make Artists Anonymous a fun and different kind of show are:
1)    All works are completed on canvases of identical size
2)    As the name suggests, this is an anonymous showing and artists are asked to submit their works with signatures and titles on the back of the works only.  Anonymity ensures that the art will be sold on artistic merit, and not for the name associated with it.
3)    We will actively solicit the participation of certain well known professional artists which will add excitement and intrigue to the event.
4)    The fixed price of $100 makes the art affordable and places new and emerging artists on a level playing field with those who have more experience.  As this is a fundraiser, all works will be for sale at $100 broken down when sold as $50 to the artist and $50 to the ACNO.
These concepts make Artists Anonymous perfect for students and emerging artists, and we encourage participation from anyone who is interested.  As an extra bonus, students aged 13-18 will receive a complimentary membership to the ACNO in thanks for their participation.  Members save $10 off classes at the Vernon Community Arts Centre and also receive our bi-monthly newsletter filled with arts-related news, our class brochure for each session, and much more.
We need artists to express their interest by March 7th.  This allows us to ensure we have enough canvases for all those interested.  Submissions must be completed by 4:00 pm, Novermber 21st, 2008.   We will supply the first canvas at no cost to the artist, and up to 3 may be submitted.

For more information on submissions, etc., please refer to the call to artists, visit our website, www.vernonartscouncil.ca, or call 542-6243.

Who is eligible:  All current members of the Arts Council of the North Okanagan.  Non-members may join the Council in order to participate.
Application Fees:  There is no application fee associated with Artists Anonymous; however, entrants must be members, as stated above.
Submissions:  There are two stages of submission.  Artists may submit a maximum of 3 pieces.  The first canvas will be supplied at no cost to the artist by the Council and up to 2 additional canvases may be entered (artistís expense) as per the submission criteria. 1) Expression of interest and commitment to participate must be made to the Vernon Community Arts Centre, (250) 542-6243 by March 7th, 2008.  Canvases will be available for pickup shortly thereafter. Submissions are to be delivered by the artist to the Arts Centre no later than 4:00 pm on Friday, November 21st, 2008.2) Works must be completed on canvases measuring precisely 8î x 8î x 1 1/2î unframed - no other sizes will be accepted.
Additional Criteria:  Acceptable media include paint, collage and low relief, such as with clay, metal, etc.  Submissions must be signed and have the title on the back of the work only as this is an anonymous show.  Optional: A short artistís statement or bio may be included with the submission.
Selling the Works:  All paintings will be priced at $100.00 each, to be broken down, when sold as $50 to artist, $50 to ACNO. Unsold works are to be picked up no later than December 15th, 2008.

Announces New Artistic Director Internship

As part of its ongoing commitment to foster education in the performing arts, Kelowna Actors Studio is pleased to announce an artistic director internship. Effective immediately, James Long will commence a nine-month, full-time internship under the supervision of the company’s artistic director, Randy Leslie.

“We were looking to attract a young theatre director who is hungry to develop their artistic and management skills,” says Leslie.

In addition to defining a company's creative direction, the artistic director directly influences the business operation of the company. An internship is one of the most effective means for providing the real world experiences that support the training and development of practitioners keen to become artistic directors.

Long is no stranger to Kelowna Actors Studio. He has performed virtually every function at the theatre, including acting, stage management, and has been assistant director to Leslie on several of the company’s productions.

“James is eager to pursue a career in theatre arts management," concludes Leslie. "This internship is a means for him to accomplish this goal. We are eager to have James as part of our team.”
Kelowna Actors Studio is the only licensed dinner theatre in the Okanagan Valley. With a season subscriber base of over 1600, their mandate is to provide quality theatre and education, which showcases and fosters Okanagan talent.
