The Swellegant Awards, A Hilarious Improvised Evening of Comedy

Cleland Community Theatre,
325 Power St. Penticton, B.C.
Tickets $17.00+GST available at
the Box Office (250) 490 2426

The Swellegant Awards
"In the Tradition of any and all Award Shows, the Swellegant Awards are an Improvised Award Show Parody that also Celebrates People that are Better than other PeopleÖand you know who you are!"

The Swellegant Awards is a hilarious improvised evening of comedy that parodies any and all award shows (think the ěOscarsî).  The show is developed and performed in front of and with the audience. Celebrating the 'stars' in the audience, three hysterical improvisers have the difficult and unenviable challenge of playing all of the show's cast including the actors, hosts, technicians, producers and any and all other characters that come up!  Fueled by hope and delusion, The Producer, The Host and The Technician perform a 100 plus cast show, with help from the ëstarsí in the audience, creating a side-splittingly funny evening in the tradition of "the show must go on....and on...and on...and on..."

Why Water Matters Today & Tomorrow

Express Critical IssuesIs the Okanagan being sucked dry by out of control growth, bad planning and conflicting agendas? Should we be worried? Our population has already far surpassed anything our leaders and planners predicted back in the 1970s, and the growth looks only to continue. Experts say we're in trouble. And there are signs everywhere they may be right:
  • Mounting boil water advisories;
  • Soaring costs to taxpayers to meet new water regulations;
  • Rising recreational use near reservoirs;
  • Mega-developments extracting from already stretched resources;
  • Conflict between local communities and provincial government over water rights and usage.

    What's the Okanagan to do? It's a conversation parched minds need to have.

    The Okanagan Institute slakes that thirst with Dry as Dirt: Clear Thinking About Water - June 5 at our new location the Bohemian Café located at 524 Bernard Avenue starting at 4:30 pm.

    Okanagan InstituteOkanagan InstituteOkanagan InstituteFeatured guests:

    Brian Jamieson, PEng, is the general manager of the Westbank Irrigation District. Since taking on the position in 2002 he has overseen the transformation of the district into an operation known for unthinkably murky spring run-off to one of the best water purveyors in the Okanagan with the opening in 2007 of its multi-million dollar water treatment plant. He currently sits as a director of the Water Supply Association of BC. A mining engineer by profession, prior to moving to the valley Jamieson worked for corporations such as Noranda, and later as mine manager of Cameco overseeing the company's $420-million McArthur River Project in the mid-1990s. Thereafter he was appointed vice-president.

    James Baker is the mayor of Lake Country and has recently taken on the fight to save local reservoirs from recreational encroachment. He's one of the community's founding councillors and before that served 12 years as regional director with the Central Okanagan. Born and raised in Lytton, BC, Baker has a Masters in Archaeology from Simon Fraser University and taught at Okanagan University College until he retired in 2000 and has since been named Professor Emeritus of Anthropology.

    Nelson Jatel, BSc, works with the Okanagan Water Stewardship Council to develop practical solutions that reflect the best available science, innovative policy and consensus approaches. Nelson has a background in freshwater science and was previously the Executive Director of the Okanagan Partnership.

    Dry as Dirt: Clear Thinking About Water is a free event, and takes place at the Bohemian Café. This marks the 43nd event the Okanagan Institute has held since the Express series got underway in July 2007. Since that time, the series has played host to many local luminaries, including artists Lee Claremont and Gary Pearson, BC Book Award nominee Don Gayton, CBC Literary prize winner poet Harold Rhenisch, animator and filmmaker Jim Cliffe, architect Jim Meiklejohn, and others from a variety of creative fields.

    The Real Dirt on Farmer John
    The Real Dirt on Farmer John is a personal documentary about John Peterson, a farmer, artist, and eccentric/innovative thinker cast in rural Illinois. Filmmaker Taggart Siegel has documented John's struggle to redefine his family farm for over twenty years, witnessing the colorful drama of John's life. With the death of his father during the late 60's John turns his traditional family farm into an experiment of art and culture, making it a haven for hippies, radicals and artists. The Real Dirt on Farmer John charts the end of this idealistic era as the farm debt crisis of the 1980s brings about the tragic collapse of the farm.

    I Shot Andy Warhol
    This film explores the provocative shooting of sixties superstar Andy Warhol.  He was the world renowned king of pop art and his life took a dramatic turn in exchange for someone else's 15 minutes of fame.

    July 31
    Kandahar
    The film is based on a story (partly true, party fictionalized) of a successful Afghan-Canadian that returns to Afghanistan after receiving a letter from his sister, who was left behind when the family escaped, that she plans on committing suicide on the last solar eclipse of the millennium.

    August 28
    Andy Goldsworthy, Rivers and Tides
    “The theatrical phenomenon Rivers and Tides depicts the magical relationship between art and nature while painting a visually intoxicating portrait of famed artist Andy Goldsworthy."  The film follows the bohemian free spirited Goldsworthy all over the world as he demonstrates and opens up about his unique creative process.
