KELOWNA ACTORS STUDIO PRESENTS LOST IN YONKERS

Neil Simon Poignant Comedy Sure to Strike a Cord
(KELOWNA, BC) - Kelowna Actors Studio is pleased to announce the second production of its sixth season with Neil Simon's Pulitzer Prize winning comedy, Lost in Yonkers. The play opens on Thursday, February 5 and runs Thursday to Sunday evenings, with a Saturday matinee, until March 1.

It is 1942. As the play opens, a man deposits his two young sons on his mother’s Yonkers doorstep. Over the course of the next ten months, the boys are forced to contend with their Grandmother, a stern, tough old woman, her dim-witted daughter, Bella with her secret romance, and their Uncle Louie, a small-time hood.

Neil Simon first published Lost in Yonkers in the United States in 1991. The play was an immediate critical and popular success and led to a film adaptation in 1993. After eleven previews, the Broadway production, directed by Gene Saks, opened on February 21, 1991 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, where it ran for 780 performances. Although many of Simon's plays had won major dramatic awards before this, Lost in Yonkers was the first Simon play to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play also won the 1991 Tony Award and the Drama Desk Award for Best New Play. Acting Tonys and Drama Desk awards were also presented to Mercedes Ruehl (Bella), Kevin Spacey (Louis), and Irene Worth (Grandma).

"This is one of the best plays I have ever read and the only one ever that made me laugh out loud," says the company's artistic director, Randy Leslie. "I knew on first reading that we just had to present it. The play was first published as America was entering the Gulf War in the Middle East and World War II plays an important part in the narrative. The play's main themes of survival, the importance of family, and acceptance are just as relevant today with the turmoil in Afghanistan and Iraq such a part of our daily newscasts."

Kelowna Actors Studio's production is directed and produced by Randy Leslie, and stars Ryan Taylor and Joshua Donaldson as Jay and Arty. The cast also includes Patricia Burns as Bella, Vivian Hughes as Grandma, Brad Hull as Louie, Valeh Ashraf as Gert, and Frank Takacs as Eddie.

"This is a difficult show to cast because the two leads are young boys,” admits Leslie. "I am thrilled that Ryan and Josh rose to the occasion. These are two very talented young men who I'm sure Kelowna audiences will fall in love with! They are joined on stage by some of the best talent in the Okanagan. The result is pure magic."

Nate Flavel is the executive producer and set designer, master carpenter is Myles Christensen with set décor by Patricia Burns. Stage manager and props are by James Long and costuming by Norene Morrow.

Lost in Yonkers runs at the Kelowna Actors Studio (1379 Ellis, across from the Public Library) Thursday to Sunday evenings, with a Saturday matinee, from February 5 to March 1, with dinner and dessert ticket options available. For further information, or to purchase tickets, visit the on-site box office, call 250 862 2867, or log on to KelownaActorsStudio.com.
