The People Behind the Cameras Step into the Spotlight

Couldn't afford the airfare to Sundance? Not on the inside for that truffles and triple sec opening night extravaganza? No problem. The 12th Okanagan International Film Festival has linked up with the Okanagan Institute for a "reel" look at the industry through the eyes six extraordinary Canadian filmmakers and their films.

On Thursday, April 23rd at 5 pm the ongoing weekly Okanagan Institute Express series at the Bohemian Café presents Local Heroes: Film and Filmmakers in Profile, featuring an up-close look behind the scenes of the Festival's six films to be screened later that evening - the feature-film Sledhead, followed by a series of exceptional shorts - A Light Obstical, i-2-i, ka na'dean, Coming Home, and A Passion for Form.

Join us as we get tips on technique, follow inspiration to creation and find out how film making really works. Each one of our guests has a close link to the Okanagan. This region played a role in every film. In some cases, the filmmakers themselves live here, while the stories are of elsewhere. In others, the Okanagan played the role of a backdrop to a larger story. For still others - like Sledhead - it was the inspiration.

Dave McIlvrideAlison LoveTwo-time Gemini winning director-producer Dave McIlvride and producer Alison Love are the brains behind the documentary Sledhead. It was a visit to Kelowna's 2007 Sledge hockey Challenge that inspired them to film a documentary about a disabled hockey team determined to win.

Zainab SiddiquZainab Siddiqui, Karachi-born and Canadian educated, will discuss her three-minute documentary A Light Obstical on the perils of crossing the street. Her work will interest anyone who has made it overHarvey on foot in the summer.

Jim EldertonJim Elderton, winner of the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan's 2000 Media (Film) award, brings major film and television experience to his documentary i-2-i. He will explain how this study of a class of six-graders who relocate to a retirement community has somenon-stereotypical lessons for old and young in Kelowna.

Marc ArellanoMarc Arellano will discuss his film ka na'dean which explores the notion of Canadian identity. A Kelowna-based poet, filmmaker and educator, Arellano's documentary weaves history, memory and relationships into a narrative of one family's atypical membership in Canada's national family.

Richard KnightRichard Knight's documentary, Coming Home, follows six people in search of affordable housing. Thisshould find resonance with an audience in Kelowna, home to some of the world's most expensive and least accessible accommodation.

Jiri BakalaJiri Bakala will talk about his film A Passion for Form. After an apprenticeship in the Czech Republic broadcasting and filmmaking, followed by a directing career with the CBC, Bakala settled in Kelowna to focus on independent television production and cinematography, narrative film making and music videos. He soon cast his eye to one of the region's most celebrated sculptors.
